How to Bypass Google Drive Download Quota Exceeded Limit

If you are trying to download a popular file shared with you via Google Drive and see a message saying “Download Quota Exceeded” or “Sorry, you can’t view or download this file at this time,” you are not alone.

Google Drive imposes temporary download limits on public links to prevent server overload. Fortunately, there is a simple workaround that allows you to bypass this limit and download the file immediately.

Why Does Google Drive Block Downloads?

To prevent bandwidth abuse, Google limits the number of downloads a shared file can receive within a 24-hour window. If a shared file is downloaded hundreds or thousands of times, the link is locked. This lock typically lasts for 24 hours, but can sometimes take up to a week to clear automatically.

The “Make a Copy” Bypass Method (Fastest Solution)

The most effective way to bypass the download quota error is by copying the file to your personal Google Drive account. Since the daily limit applies to the original link, creating a personal copy resets the download limit for your account.

Follow these steps to copy and download the file:

Step 1: Add a Shortcut to Your Drive

1. Open the shared Google Drive download link that is throwing the quota error.
2. In the top-right corner of the preview page, click the Google Drive icon (Add to My Drive) or click the Organize icon (folder with a plus sign) and choose Add Shortcut.
3. Choose My Drive as the location and click Add.

Step 2: Access Your Personal Google Drive

1. Open a new browser tab and navigate to Google Drive.
2. Ensure you are signed in to the same Google Account where you just saved the shortcut.
3. Click on My Drive in the left sidebar. You should see the shortcut to the locked file.

Step 3: Create a Hard Copy of the File

Note: You cannot download the shortcut directly because it still references the locked original file. You must make a duplicate.

1. Right-click on the shortcut file.
2. Select Make a copy from the context menu.
3. Google Drive will generate a new file named Copy of [Filename]. This file belongs completely to your account, and its download counter starts at zero!

Step 4: Download Your Copied File

1. Right-click the newly created copy (Copy of [Filename]).
2. Select Download.
3. The file will scan for viruses and download to your machine without any quota issues.
4. Once downloaded, you can delete the copy from your Google Drive to free up your storage space.

Alternate Solution: Use Shared Drives

If you have a Google Workspace account, you can drag the shortcut into a Shared Drive folder. Moving a shortcut into a Shared Drive forces a server-side download copy, allowing team members to access it instantly.
