How to Fix iCloud Error 4001
iCloud error 4001 indicates that your device was unable to authenticate with Apple’s iCloud servers. You may see “Authentication failed. Please check your credentials and try again (Error 4001).”
Step 1: What Causes iCloud Error 4001
- Incorrect Apple ID or password entered during sign-in
- Expired authentication token that hasn’t been refreshed
- Two-factor authentication code not delivered or entered incorrectly
- Apple ID account locked after multiple failed login attempts
- Outdated operating system incompatible with current iCloud auth protocols
Step 2: Verify Your Apple ID Credentials
- Navigate to https://appleid.apple.com and sign in with your Apple ID
- If you can log in successfully, your credentials are valid
- If you cannot log in, click Forgot Apple ID or password? and follow recovery steps
On macOS: Open System Settings > Apple ID, sign out, then sign back in carefully.
On Windows: Open iCloud for Windows, click Sign Out, re-enter your credentials, and enter the verification code sent to your trusted device.
Step 3: Resolve Two-Factor Authentication Issues
Error 4001 frequently occurs when a two-factor authentication code fails to validate.
- Ensure your trusted device (iPhone, iPad, or Mac) is nearby and powered on
- Enter the six-digit code within 30 seconds of receiving it
- If codes aren’t arriving, go to Settings > [Your Name] > Sign-In & Security and verify your trusted phone number
Generate a code manually on macOS:
- Open System Settings > Apple ID > Sign-In & Security
- Click Get Verification Code
- Use the displayed code on the device where you’re signing in
Step 4: Reset iCloud Authentication on Your Device
On macOS:
- Open System Settings > Apple ID and click Sign Out
- Choose whether to keep a copy of your iCloud data locally
- Clear cached tokens and restart:
killall bird && killall cloudd
defaults delete MobileMeAccounts
- Restart your Mac and sign back into iCloud
On Windows:
- Open iCloud for Windows and click Sign Out
- Force stop background processes:
taskkill /F /IM iCloudServices.exe
taskkill /F /IM iCloudDrive.exe
- Restart your computer and sign back in
Step 5: Contact Apple Support for Account Recovery
If you still encounter error 4001, your account may require manual intervention:
- Visit https://support.apple.com and choose Apple ID > Sign-in Issues

- Check https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/ for service outages affecting Apple ID or iCloud Account & Sign In
