How to Fix iCloud Error 4026
iCloud error 4026 means that iCloud Keychain failed to sync your passwords, credit card information, and secure notes between devices. The error appears as “iCloud Keychain sync failed. Unable to sync credentials across devices (Error 4026).”
Step 1: What Causes iCloud Error 4026
- Device not approved for iCloud Keychain by an existing trusted device
- Two-factor authentication not enabled on the Apple ID
- iCloud Keychain disabled on one or more devices
- Keychain database corruption on the local device
- Security code changes that invalidated the Keychain sync circle
Step 2: Re-enable iCloud Keychain on All Devices
On macOS:
- Open System Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Passwords & Keychain
- Toggle Sync this Mac off, wait 30 seconds, then toggle it back on
- Enter your Apple ID password when prompted
On iPhone/iPad:
- Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Passwords & Keychain
- Turn off Sync this iPhone, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on
Repeat on every device signed into your Apple ID.
Step 3: Approve Keychain Sync from a Trusted Device
When enabling iCloud Keychain on a new device, it must be approved by an existing trusted device.
- Enable iCloud Keychain on the new device
- A notification will appear on your other Apple devices — tap Allow or Approve
- Enter the device passcode of the trusted device to confirm
If you don’t receive a prompt, ensure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network and signed into the same Apple ID. You can also choose Approve with Security Code and enter your iCloud Security Code instead.
Step 4: Reset iCloud Keychain Completely
If sync remains broken, reset iCloud Keychain to establish a new sync circle.
On your primary Mac (with the most up-to-date passwords):
- Back up your Keychain first:
cp ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain-db ~/Desktop/login-keychain-backup.db
- Open System Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Passwords & Keychain
- Toggle off Sync this Mac and choose Keep on This Mac
- On all other devices, turn off iCloud Keychain and choose Delete from [Device]
- On the primary Mac, turn iCloud Keychain back on — this creates a new sync circle
- On each other device, re-enable iCloud Keychain and approve from the primary Mac
Step 5: Verify Keychain Sync with iCloud for Windows
- Ensure iCloud for Windows 12.5 or later is installed
- Open iCloud for Windows and enable Passwords
- Enter the verification code sent to your trusted Apple device
- Install the iCloud Passwords browser extension for Chrome or Edge
If passwords aren’t appearing:
- Verify Windows Hello is set up — iCloud Passwords requires it for authentication
- Ensure the browser extension is enabled and signed in
- Restart iCloud for Windows and check again after 5 minutes
Tip: Always back up your passwords using Keychain Access > File > Export Items before performing any Keychain reset. This creates an encrypted backup you can re-import if needed.
