Zoom App Keeps Crashing

If the Zoom desktop app freezes during meetings, crashes on launch, or becomes completely unresponsive, the cause is often corrupted app data, insufficient system resources, or conflicts with other software. Follow these steps to stabilize your Zoom installation.

Step 1: Force Quit and Restart Zoom

Before trying advanced fixes, fully terminate and restart the application.

On Windows:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Look for Zoom or Zoom Workplace in the process list.
  3. Right-click it and select End task.
  4. If multiple Zoom processes are listed, end all of them.
  5. Relaunch Zoom from the Start menu.

On macOS:

  1. Press Cmd + Option + Esc to open Force Quit Applications.
  2. Select zoom.us and click Force Quit.
  3. Alternatively, use the terminal:
killall zoom.us
  1. Reopen Zoom from your Applications folder.

If Zoom crashes immediately upon reopening, proceed to the next steps.

Step 2: Update Zoom to the Latest Version

Running an outdated version is one of the most common causes of crashes and instability.

  1. Open Zoom and click your profile iconCheck for Updates.
  2. If an update is available, install it and restart Zoom.
  3. If Zoom crashes before you can access the menu, download the latest version directly from zoom.us/download and install it over your existing installation.

You can check your current version in SettingsGeneral → scroll to the bottom. Compare it against the latest version listed on the Zoom download page.

Step 3: Clear Zoom Cache and App Data

Corrupted cache files can cause repeated crashes, especially after failed updates.

On Windows:

taskkill /f /im Zoom.exe
rmdir /s /q "%AppData%\Zoom\data"
rmdir /s /q "%AppData%\Zoom\logs"

On macOS:

killall zoom.us
rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/zoom.us/data
rm -rf ~/Library/Logs/zoom.us

After clearing the cache, relaunch Zoom. You may need to sign in again, as cached session data will be removed.

Step 4: Check System Resources and Conflicts

Zoom may crash if your system is running low on memory or if conflicting software interferes.

  1. Check available RAM:

    • On Windows, open Task ManagerPerformance tab → check Memory usage.
    • On macOS, open Activity MonitorMemory tab → check Memory Pressure.
    • Zoom recommends at least 4 GB of RAM available.
  2. Close resource-heavy applications before joining meetings:

    • Web browsers with many tabs
    • Video editing software
    • Other conferencing apps (Teams, Slack video calls)
  3. Disable conflicting software:

    • Temporarily disable antivirus real-time scanning to test if it interferes with Zoom.
    • Disable overlay software such as NVIDIA GeForce Experience overlay or Discord overlay.
  4. Check CPU temperature — if your CPU is thermal throttling, Zoom may freeze. Use monitoring tools like HWMonitor (Windows) or Intel Power Gadget (macOS).

Step 5: Perform a Clean Reinstall

If Zoom continues to crash after the steps above, perform a complete clean reinstall.

On Windows:

  1. Open SettingsAppsInstalled apps.
  2. Find Zoom Workplace and click Uninstall.
  3. Delete remaining files:
rmdir /s /q "%AppData%\Zoom"
rmdir /s /q "%ProgramFiles%\Zoom"
rmdir /s /q "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Zoom"
  1. Restart your computer.
  2. Download and install Zoom from zoom.us/download.

On macOS:

  1. Drag zoom.us from Applications to the Trash.
  2. Remove remaining files:
rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/zoom.us
rm -rf ~/Library/Preferences/us.zoom.*
rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/us.zoom.xos
rm -rf ~/Library/Logs/zoom.us
  1. Empty the Trash and restart your Mac.
  2. Download and install the latest version from zoom.us/download.

If crashes persist after a clean reinstall, consider creating a new macOS or Windows user profile and testing Zoom there to rule out profile-level corruption.
