Zoom Audio Not Working

If you have no sound during Zoom meetings, or other participants cannot hear you, the issue is usually related to incorrect device selection, missing permissions, or outdated audio drivers. This guide walks you through every step to restore your audio.

Step 1: Check Your Audio Device Settings in Zoom

  1. Open the Zoom desktop app and click your profile icon in the top-right corner.
  2. Select SettingsAudio.
  3. Under Speaker, use the dropdown to select the correct output device (e.g., your headset or built-in speakers).
  4. Under Microphone, select the correct input device.
  5. Make sure “Automatically join audio by computer when joining a meeting” is checked.

If you are already in a meeting:

  1. Click the arrow (^) next to the Mute/Unmute button in the toolbar.
  2. Select Audio Settings to verify your speaker and microphone selection.
  3. If you see “Join Audio” instead of the mute button, click it and choose Join with Computer Audio.

Step 2: Test Your Microphone and Speakers

  1. In SettingsAudio, click Test Speaker. You should hear a test tone. If not, try a different speaker from the dropdown.
  2. Click Test Mic and speak into your microphone. The input level bar should move and you should hear playback.
  3. Adjust the Input Volume slider if the level bar barely moves.
  4. Uncheck “Automatically adjust microphone volume” if your volume fluctuates unpredictably.

If neither test produces sound:

  • Ensure your headset or speakers are powered on and not muted via a physical switch.
  • Try unplugging and re-plugging your audio device.
  • Test with a different USB port or a different audio device entirely.

Step 3: Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers

On Windows:

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click your audio device and select Update driverSearch automatically for drivers.
  4. If no update is found, visit the manufacturer’s website to download the latest driver manually.
  5. To reinstall, right-click the device, select Uninstall device, then restart your PC. Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.

On macOS:

  1. macOS manages audio drivers through system updates. Go to Apple menuSystem SettingsGeneralSoftware Update.
  2. Install any available updates.
  3. If using a USB audio device, try resetting the Core Audio process:
sudo killall coreaudiod

This restarts the audio subsystem without requiring a reboot.

Step 4: Adjust Operating System Audio Permissions

On Windows:

  1. Go to SettingsPrivacy & SecurityMicrophone.
  2. Ensure “Microphone access” is turned On.
  3. Scroll down and make sure Zoom is listed and enabled under “Let apps access your microphone”.

On macOS:

  1. Go to Apple menuSystem SettingsPrivacy & SecurityMicrophone.
  2. Find zoom.us in the list and ensure the toggle is enabled.
  3. If Zoom is not listed, you may need to uninstall and reinstall the app to trigger the permission prompt again.

Step 5: Advanced Audio Troubleshooting

If the steps above did not resolve the issue, try these additional fixes:

  • Disable audio enhancements on Windows: Go to SettingsSystemSound → select your device → Advanced → uncheck “Enable audio enhancements”.
  • Close conflicting apps: Applications like Discord, Teams, or OBS may lock your audio device. Close them before joining a Zoom meeting.
  • Switch audio processing: In Zoom SettingsAudioAudio Profile, switch between Zoom Optimized Audio and Original Sound to see which works.
  • Reinstall Zoom: Uninstall Zoom completely, then download the latest version from zoom.us/download.

If the issue persists only in specific meetings, ask the meeting host to check whether participants have been muted on entry or whether the meeting is in “Mute All” mode.
